The sixth generation of connectivity: the foundation of a new technological era in the UAE
The government of the United Arab Emirates has announced the launch of a national program to develop and implement sixth-generation (6G) communication networks.
The project is aimed at advancing ultra-high-speed data transmission technologies, which will operate hundreds of times faster than current 5G standards.
The UAE invests in the future of communications
According to the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA), the initiative marks a new stage in the technological evolution of the country.
6G networks are expected to become the core infrastructure for the large-scale integration of artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and satellite communication systems, laying the foundation for smart cities and a data-driven economy.
Early preparation for 6G
Mohammed Al Ramsi, Deputy Director-General of TDRA, emphasized that the UAE has always been proactive in adopting emerging technologies.
“We began preparing for 5G as early as 2015, and by 2019 the UAE became the first country in the region to launch the technology commercially.
Today, its coverage exceeds 99.5% of populated areas.
This gives us a strong foundation for the next stage — building a national 6G network,”
he noted.
6G as part of the digital economy strategy
Al Ramsi explained that the transition to 6G is not just a technological upgrade, but a key element of the UAE’s long-term strategy to build a knowledge-based economy driven by innovation and digital solutions.
TDRA confirmed that a national 6G ecosystem is being established, bringing together research institutions, universities, and technology companies.
Their mission is to develop standards and solutions for critical sectors such as industry, transport, energy, and healthcare.
A step toward digital leadership
The development of sixth-generation networks represents a crucial step in the UAE’s digital transformation strategy.
The initiative will strengthen the country’s position as a regional leader in advanced technologies and a hub for innovative digital infrastructure.
