Four leading UAE universities improve their standing in international rankings

The higher education system of the United Arab Emirates continues to strengthen its international position. According to the 2026 Global 2000 ranking, published by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), four universities in the country improved their results compared to last year.

Experts attribute this growth to the active development of research activities, as well as a long-term government strategy to support education, innovation, and technological development.

Khalifa University, UAE University, University of Sharjah, and NYU Abu Dhabi maintained their leading positions among UAE universities.

UAE Universities' Performance

In the new CWUR ranking, the University of Sharjah showed the most significant progress, climbing 98 positions to rank 994th globally. Khalifa University improved its result by 51 places, reaching 795th, placing it among the top 3.8% of universities worldwide.

UAE University rose 64 positions to 958th place, while NYU Abu Dhabi also strengthened its performance, ranking 1063rd in the global ranking.

In total, CWUR specialists analyzed over 21,000 universities from 95 countries, evaluating them based on four main criteria:

  • quality of education;
  • alumni employability;
  • faculty quality;
  • research performance.

Research work has the greatest impact on the final score, accounting for 40% of the total. This metric was a key factor in the growth of Emirati universities.

Government Investments in Education Yield Results

Dr. Nadim Mahassen, President of the Center for World University Rankings, noted that the success of UAE universities is a result of a long-standing government policy aimed at developing science and education.

According to him, significant investments in research infrastructure, attracting talented specialists, and creating a favorable academic environment enable the country's universities to compete successfully at an international level.

The development of higher education in the UAE is considered one of the most important factors in building a knowledge economy, stimulating innovation, and preparing skilled personnel for the future development of the state.

UAE Universities Among Leaders in the Arab World

The strong performance of Emirati universities is reflected not only in global but also in regional rankings. In the 2026 CWUR Arab ranking, Khalifa University secured 10th place, becoming the highest-ranked university in the country.

Followed by:

  • UAE University — 12th place;
  • University of Sharjah — 13th place;
  • NYU Abu Dhabi — 18th place.

Despite strong competition from universities in Saudi Arabia and Egypt, educational institutions in the UAE continue to strengthen their positions and maintain their status as some of the most competitive in the region.

Experts note that in many Gulf countries, the improvement in university rankings is directly linked to increased investment in scientific research, engineering disciplines, and modern technologies.

Global competition in higher education intensifies

Globally, leading universities in the USA and UK maintain their leadership. Harvard University has held the top spot in the CWUR ranking for the fifteenth consecutive year. The top five also include the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Stanford University, Cambridge University, and Oxford University.

At the same time, experts observe increasing competition from Asian universities, primarily Chinese ones. In the 2026 Global 2000 ranking, China is represented by 360 universities — the best indicator among all countries worldwide.

The rise of Chinese universities is a result of many years of investment in education, scientific research, and the development of academic infrastructure.

According to CWUR analysts, the global higher education system is becoming increasingly competitive and multipolar, with countries actively investing in science and innovation gradually strengthening their influence on the global academic stage.

What this means for the UAE economy and real estate market

The strengthening position of UAE universities is significant not only for the education sector. The development of science, technology, and international academic cooperation contributes to attracting highly qualified specialists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and foreign investors.

For the UAE real estate market, this creates additional long-term growth drivers. The country's increased attractiveness as an educational and innovation hub contributes to a rise in demand for housing from expatriates, employees of international companies, and families considering the Emirates for permanent residency.

A strong educational system also remains one of the factors that investors and real estate buyers consider when choosing a country for relocation, obtaining resident status, and long-term capital preservation.

Conclusion

The results of the CWUR Global 2000 ranking for 2026 confirm the sustainable development of the UAE's higher education system. The improved standing of the country's leading universities reflects the effectiveness of government investments in science and innovation, and strengthens the Emirates' international reputation as a key educational and technological hub in the region.

Amidst intensifying global competition, the successes of UAE universities are becoming an important factor in the country's further economic development and enhancing its attractiveness to investors, skilled professionals, and international businesses.
