Sports tourism is rapidly gaining popularity among UAE residents, and this affects not only the choice of holiday destinations, but also the hotel, event and even investment markets, including the residential real estate segment in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

According to a study by the Hyatt hotel chain, almost 45% of UAE residents base their vacation plans around major sporting events, such as Formula One races, international football tournaments and world-class matches.

Sport as part of lifestyle and tourism

The survey, which involved 2,100 respondents, showed:

• On average, UAE residents intend take part in 12 sporting events and attend 7 as spectators within the next 12 months;
  
  
• 30% are willing to travel long distances for their favorite team, and 27% — overpay for hotels with a fan zone atmosphere;
  
  
• Soccer remains the most popular travel sport (52% of respondents chose it);
  
  
• There is a growing interest in cricket, cycling, swimming and bodybuilding, which influences the choice of locations for both recreation and permanent residence.

Sports tourism supports demand for real estate

Active development sports infrastructure in Dubai (stadiums, fan zones, cycling routes, swimming complexes) makes the city particularly attractive for expats, investors and tenants:

• 52% of tourists choose hotels near sports arenas, which increases the attractiveness of areas with similar infrastructure and for short-term rental investments;
  
  
• About 33% prefer to stay where teams and athletes live, and these are most often premium residential areas with high-class hotels, apartments and residences;
  
  
• Combined business and sports trips are becoming more frequent — and this increases the demand for luxury real estate with fitness centers, swimming pools and convenient transport access to sports facilities.
