Construction of the world's largest airport enters a new phase
Dubai continues to implement one of the world's most ambitious infrastructure projects. The first phase of Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC) is scheduled for completion by 2032. Once operational, the new aviation hub will be able to accommodate up to 150 million passengers annually, and will eventually gradually take over all flights currently served by Dubai International Airport (DXB).
Khalifa Al Zaffin, Executive Chairman of Dubai Aviation City Corporation, provided an update on the project's progress during The Airport Show industry exhibition.
According to him, work has already begun on site, and the emirate's authorities are consistently moving forward with the project, which is set to become the world's largest airport in the future.
Contract signed for the construction of a second runway
A significant milestone in the airport's development was the signing of a AED 1 billion contract for the construction of a second runway.
Additionally, preparatory work totaling AED 75 million is already underway, which includes site engineering and the establishment of the necessary infrastructure base for further construction.
According to project representatives, this work marks the initial phase of a large-scale airport expansion that will be implemented incrementally over the coming years.
What the new Al Maktoum International Airport will be like
The future airport is being designed as a high-tech, next-generation aviation complex. A large passenger terminal will be its central element, integrating arrival and departure zones and connecting to several concourses.
Project management notes that the architectural concept was developed after analyzing various international airport models to create the most convenient space possible for passengers and airlines.
Previously, Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths stated that the airport's territory would be divided into eight smaller, separate aviation complexes. This approach aims to enhance passenger comfort and make movement within the airport more convenient.
Special attention is being paid to creating modern commercial infrastructure. The airport will feature extensive retail spaces, duty-free shops, restaurants, and relaxation areas. The concept envisions the airport becoming not just a transportation hub, but also a standalone attraction for travelers.
Artificial intelligence to form the core of airport operations
A key feature of the new airport will be the extensive use of artificial intelligence and automation technologies.
Digital systems are planned to manage gate assignments by analyzing passenger flows and transit connections. For instance, aircraft with a large number of connecting passengers will be able to be automatically positioned next to each other to reduce waiting times and enhance travel convenience.
Dubai authorities also previously unveiled the concept of a smart corridor, which will significantly speed up immigration procedures. In the future, passengers will be able to clear control in just a few seconds thanks to the integration of modern biometric technologies.
Project representatives note, however, that the implementation of such solutions will occur gradually after testing and verification of their effectiveness.
Project scale: 260 million passengers per year
Upon full completion of construction, Al Maktoum International Airport will become the largest aviation complex in the world.
The project includes:
- an annual capacity of up to 260 million passengers;
- handling up to 12 million tons of cargo per year;
- an area of approximately 70 square kilometers;
- two passenger terminals;
- seven concourses;
- more than 400 aircraft gates.
For comparison, the new airport's area will be approximately five times larger than that of the current Dubai International Airport.
What the development of DWC means for Dubai's economy and real estate market
The development of Al Maktoum International is not just a transportation project, but also a crucial element of the emirate's long-term economic growth strategy.
Large infrastructure projects traditionally boost business activity, create new jobs, and attract international companies. The extensive Dubai South district is already developing around the airport, and it is considered one of the key centers for Dubai's future growth.
The expansion of transportation infrastructure typically has a positive impact on demand for residential and commercial real estate in surrounding areas. Improved accessibility, job creation, and increased business activity enhance the location's appeal for both investors and homebuyers.
Amidst the ongoing development of Dubai South and the implementation of the Al Maktoum International project, this area remains one of the most promising directions for long-term real estate investments in the UAE.
Conclusion
The construction of Al Maktoum International Airport continues to be one of Dubai's most ambitious projects. By 2032, the first phase will be able to serve up to 150 million passengers annually, and eventually, the airport will become the world's largest aviation hub.
The active implementation of artificial intelligence technologies, extensive infrastructure, and integration with the developing Dubai South district make the project a significant driver of the emirate's economic growth and a key factor in the further development of the UAE real estate market.
