The Hafeet Rail project will be the first railway link between the UAE and Oman. The new line will connect Al Ain and the port of Sohar, making travel between countries faster, more convenient and more predictable.
What is Hafeet Rail
Hafeet Rail is a joint project between three parties:
- Etihad Rail (UAE)
- Oman Rail
- Mubadala Investment Company
The main task is to combine the transport systems of the two countries and create a single railway corridor across the border.
The project is estimated at approximately $2.5 billion.
At what stage of construction
- start of work: Year 2024
- readiness for April 2026: about 40%
- total route length: 303 km
- key site (Sohar — Abu Dhabi): 238 km
Construction is underway at several points at once:
- Al Ain
- Al Buraimi
- Sohar
- Wadi Al-Jizzi Valley
How logistics will change
The project is primarily focused on cargo transportation and trade.
The main tasks are:
- connect ports, industrial zones and logistics hubs
- reduce transportation costs
- improve supply stability
- create a single transport corridor in the region
The infrastructure will include:
- plus 12 passenger stations
- 5 major ports
- from above 15 logistics facilities
What this will give passengers
Once launched, the train will become a full-fledged alternative to car travel.
Key benefits:
- reduced travel time
- no queues at the border
- a more comfortable ride
- convenience for regular trips and short trips
Trains will be able to reach speeds of up to 200 km/h.
Travel time
The project significantly reduces the duration of trips:
- Abu Dhabi — Sohar: ~1 hour 40 minutes
(it's about 3 hours 25 minutes now) - Sohar — Al Ain: ~47 minutes
(it's about 1 hour 27 minutes now)
Route feature
The line will go through:
- desert landscapes
- mountainous areas around Jebel Hafeet
Due to this, the trip itself will become part of the experience, and not just a journey from point A to point B.
The result
Hafeet Rail is not just a new railway, but an important step towards connecting the UAE and Oman's transport systems.
The project will facilitate movement, speed up logistics and make travel between countries more convenient for both residents and tourists.
