Dubai's transport infrastructure continues its digital transformation
Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is continuing a large-scale upgrade of the Nol payment system. According to the authority, 72% of the work has already been completed, with the project expected to be fully finished by the end of the first quarter of 2027.
After the upgrade, the public transport payment system will become more flexible, and the Nol card itself will be closer in functionality to bank cards. Users will be able to pay for journeys using various digital methods, manage their cards through a single account, and access new services.
A unified digital ecosystem for transport
The RTA notes that the Nol upgrade is part of a strategy to develop Dubai's fully digital transport infrastructure. The main goal of the project is to integrate various payment methods into a single system, making public transport as convenient as possible to use.
According to Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, the upgrade will be an important step in the digital transformation of government services and will enhance the efficiency of the transport system, as well as the quality of passenger service.
Furthermore, the project aligns with the implementation of the Dubai Cashless Strategy, which aims to expand the use of cashless payments across all sectors of the city's economy.
What changes await passengers
Once the upgrade is complete, residents and visitors to Dubai will be able to use more modern payment methods for metro, bus, tram, marine transport, and taxi fares.
Key benefits of the new system:
- support for multiple payment methods;
- accelerated payment processing;
- integration with digital services;
- more convenient management of transport expenses.
The RTA emphasizes that the upgrade will significantly simplify the use of public transport for both residents and tourists.
The project is being implemented in three phases
The payment system upgrade is being carried out in stages.
Phase One
Launch of QR code-based transport ticket purchases via digital channels.
Phase Two
Issuance of a new generation of Nol cards, compliant with modern international standards.
The updated cards will:
- support banking technologies;
- automatically link to the user's digital account after activation.
Phase Three
A complete update of the payment platform, which will allow paying for trips not only with a Nol card, but also with:
- bank cards;
- digital wallets on mobile devices.
This way, passengers will be able to choose the most convenient payment method without needing to use a physical transport card.
Personal Account and Enhanced Features
Upon project completion, users will gain access to a single digital account through which they can manage all transport cards.
New features include:
- personal account creation;
- linking multiple Nol cards to a single profile;
- adding cards to mobile wallets;
- purchasing tickets via QR code;
- flexible fare application.
Additional management options will also be available:
- combining family members' cards in one account;
- setting up automatic top-ups;
- setting individual top-up limits;
- viewing trip and transaction history;
- prompt card blocking when necessary;
- quick balance recovery.
Nol will become a universal payment tool
Following the upgrade, the card's functionality will significantly expand beyond the transport system.
In the future, Nol will be usable not only for paying for trips but also for various everyday payments in retail and services, becoming a full-fledged element of the city's digital payment infrastructure.
This approach aligns with Dubai's overall development strategy as one of the world's leading centers for digital technologies and a cashless economy.
The system continues to evolve
The Nol card was first launched concurrently with the opening of the Dubai Metro on September 9, 2009.
Since then, its capabilities have significantly expanded. Today, the card is used not only for public transport payments but also provides access to various discount programs, tourist offers, and specific urban mobility services, including payment for e-scooter rides.
Upon completion of the current upgrade, Nol will become an even more versatile tool, integrating transport services and digital payments into a single ecosystem.
What the modernization means for residents, investors, and the real estate market
The consistent development of digital infrastructure remains a key factor enhancing Dubai's appeal for living, doing business, and long-term investments.
Modern transport services, the integration of digital payments, and the continuous improvement of government services make the city more comfortable for residents and international professionals. For the real estate market, this is also a significant advantage, as a high level of urban infrastructure traditionally has a positive impact on the demand for residential areas and the quality of the urban environment.
