A large-scale road project is being launched in Dubai — the modernization of three key streets: Umm Suqeim, Al Wasl et Al Safa, as well as seven crossroads on Jumeirah Street.

The project includes the construction of bridges, tunnels and the expansion of roads with a total length of about 11 km.

What's going to change

After the work is completed, the throughput will increase significantly:

  • Umm Suqeim Street — up to 16,000 cars per hour
  • Al Wasl and Al Safa — up to 12,000 cars per hour

The project covers areas with a population of more than 2 million people, including residential areas, beaches, hotels and schools.

Travel time will be reduced significantly

  • Umm Suqeim: with 20 to 6 minutes (between Jumeirah Street and Al Khail Road)
  • Al Safa: with 12 to 3 minutes
  • Al Wasl: reducing the time by approximately 50%

What will they build

Umm Suqeim Street

  • reconstruction 6 intersections
  • 4 bridges and 2 tunnels (total length: 4.1 km)
  • tunnels at the intersections with Jumeirah Street and Al Wasl Road
  • bridges on Sheikh Zayed Road to eliminate traffic intersections

Al Wasl Road

  • road extension with 2 to 3 lanes in each direction
  • section length — 15 km
  • upgrading 7 intersections
  • construction 5 tunnels (3.85 km)

Al Safa Street

  • section length — 1.5 km
  • 2 bridges and 2 tunnels (3.12 km)
  • marked reduction in travel time

Jumeirah Street

  • upgrade 7 intersections
  • improved throughput
  • reducing congestion

Not just roads

The project includes:

  • pedestrian zones
  • bike paths
  • public spaces and boulevards

This makes it not only a transport project, but also an urban project.

How it fits into the transport system

Umm Suqeim Street is part of a longer corridor from:

Jumeirah Street → Emirates Road → Al Qudra Street

The project will improve communication with four key highways at once:

  • Sheikh Zayed Road
  • Al Khail Road
  • Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road
  • Emirates Road

The result

The project is aimed at:

  • reducing congestion
  • reduced travel time
  • improving district connectivity

In fact, this is another step towards a more balanced and convenient transport system in the city.
